Tengu (天狗) are a type of legendary creature found in Shinto belief. They are often a mischievous supernatural being, being considered a type of yōkai or kami.
Tengu are renowned swordsmen and are said to have taught the military arts to the Minamoto hero Yoshitsune.
According to the legend, the Tengu take the forms humanoid birds of prey, and were associated since the XIII century with the yamabushi, the mountain ascetics who practice Shugendō.
