Karate (空手), is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom. It developed from the Okinawan Ryukyuan martial arts under the influence of Chinese martial arts. In 1609 Okinawans were banned from carrying swords under samurai rule, thus giving rise to clandestine groups of young aristocrats who created unarmed combat methods as a form of resistance. This blend of martial arts became known as kara-te.
